I have, in the course of 2 weeks, heard several prominent people use the term 'civil war' to refer to our current national mood. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a ridiculous assertion. The second time, I began to think about the premise. The third time I heard it, I was listening to the Mark Levine show, I had to agree that we've crossed into what is best described as a 'soft civil war'. You can almost feel a sharp difference between Conservatives and Liberals. I almost don't need to know what a persons politics are- I can sense them. It's that uncomfortable feeling, ill at ease, awkward pauses etc. that are the hallmarks. I have no desire to get to know 'those' people, and I am sure they feel the same way about me. That is how I can tell we have crossed into a civil war. We share the same country, but are almost exact opposites when it comes to how we feel about it.
Hope won't stop a bullet and hate will not be calmed by reason. The Liberals can use lofty language and calls to moral mandates but in the end a simple phrase needs to be uttered over and over again- we are at WAR. They can sue for peace, engage our enemies in diplomatics missions over coffee or tea but rest assured in the end it will come back to steel, blood and will. If we do not stand strong now, then we are likely to sucumb listelessly later when the fight has transformed and we are slaves to the empires that control our ecomomy and national trajectory. We must take the fight to them.
